Carl flips Keselowski Print E-mail

HAMPTON, Ga. -- He should have waited until Bristol.

That's all. Just two weeks.

bk.car.193But Carl Edwards simply couldn't wait to exact some sort of revenge on Brad Keselowski. Apparently fuming over an incident much earlier in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, one in which Edwards believed overaggressive driving by Keselowski ruined his day, Edwards deliberately turned the No. 12 Dodge driven by Keselowski on Lap 323 of the scheduled 325-lap event.

He did so on the frontstretch of the 1.54-mile track, as their cars approached speeds in the 190 mph range. The end result sent Keselowski airborne. He eventually landed upside down on the driver's side of the roof of his car, instantly demolishing it.

"Did I just fly?" a dazed Keselowski asked his crew chief, Jay Guy, over the radio not long after his car finally came to a rest.

Told that indeed, he just did fly, Keselowski also asked: "Did I hurt any fans or anything? Is everybody OK out there?"

Meanwhile, Edwards was expressing concern over his radio at about the same time. He told his crew chief, Bob Osborne: "Let me know if he gets out. Let me know if he's OK."

Chasing Down Lady Luck

By Kindra K. Littrell

800px-crapsWhat does the color green, peanuts in the shell and $50 bills have to do with a successful stock car race team? Some teams will tell you nothing- as in they will have NOTHING to do with any of those things on their team. They are convinced that items like peanuts or the color green will bring bad luck to their team, their car or their driver. Other teams believe that the only genuine good or bad luck is the luck you make for yourself. But everyone agrees that superstition in stock car racing exists. Some superstitions have specific origins, while others seem to have just always been around.

One superstition with a credible back story is stock car racing’s dislike of the color green. In 1920 the defending Indianapolis 500 champion Gaston Chevrolet was driving a green car in a Beverly Hills, California race.He was involved in a wreck that took the lives of himself and another driver. It was the first racing wreck in US history to kill two drivers at once. Many attributed the tragedy to the green car, and the infamous superstition was born.

Innovation, Creativity or Just Cheating?

By Kindra K. Littrell

inspection_384Anytime you put two or more people together in competition there is the possibility of cheating. In most sports cheating is just plain cheating. Corked bats, steroid enhanced muscles, fixed fights, bribed officials. All of these would be labeled as cheating by anyone. It is human nature to seek an easier, better way to win. Most competitors seek the win within the confines of the rules. Some competitors do not. Stock car racing is no different. What is different is the definition, method, and consequences of cheating in stock car racing.

The Definition

Cheat; verb, 1 a: to practice fraud or trickery b: to violate rules dishonestly

There is so much more to cheating and cheaters than the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition you read above. Especially in stock car racing. First you have those who almost never technically cheat, masters of the grey area. Smokey Yunick was one of the greatest of these masters. He found new and interesting ways to make his cars go faster all the time. He made an aluminum bumper to reduce weight. He ran oversized gas lines to run longer. There were not specific rules in NASCAR that prohibited these things. Smokey was just doing his job: finding ways to make the car go faster while not breaking any specific rules.

Are you guys and gals getting your cars and crew ready for 2010? Are you running your racing line through your head? C'mon, get on the forum and talk about it. Let's start the trash talking now!

What have you guys done to your cars over this off season. Have you made some upgrades, some significant changes or are you just keeping it the way it was last season and hope your just as fast?

As we get closer to the start of the 2010 season. I start to get more and more antsy. I start running through my racing line for Bolivar Speedway. Sometimes I even run my race line through I-70 Speedway in hopes that it will open back up sometime. We also may be heading to a new track this season, I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri! I can't really run a racing line in my head for that track as we've never been there, and the track (as far as I understand) has been completely repaved.

We are all anxious to hear if we get to run I-44 Speedway, and we are all anxious to hear that the rumors of I-70 Speedway opening back up are all true! Let's get on here and start blabbin about the upcoming season and talk about what we've got going on with our cars. We need to get more fans involved in the website as well. Tell everyone you know, on Facebook, on MySpace or anywhere to get on the new and improved omsra.net and talk to the drivers!

In the words of Larry McReynolds - "Reach up there and pull those seat belts tight one more time!"
